Tuberculosis (TB) of the Spine: A Treatable Condition if Diagnosed Early
Back pain that persists for weeks should never be ignored. One important cause is Tuberculosis (TB) of the spine, also called Pott's spine. Contrary to popular belief, spinal TB is completely treatable, and with timely diagnosis, most patients can achieve a full recovery.
Common symptoms include persistent back or neck pain, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, night sweats, difficulty walking, numbness or weakness in the legs, and, in advanced cases, bladder or bowel problems.
Diagnosis involves MRI of the spine, blood tests (ESR/CRP), CT scan when required, and a biopsy to confirm the infection.
Treatment mainly consists of anti-tubercular medications for several months. Surgery is required only in selected patients with severe nerve compression, spinal instability, deformity, or failure of medical treatment.
Good news: Spinal TB is not a communicable disease through routine contact. Family members and caregivers do not need to worry about catching the disease while caring for the patient.
Early diagnosis prevents paralysis, spinal deformity, and permanent disability. If you have persistent back pain with unexplained weight loss, fever, or neurological symptoms, consult a neurosurgeon without delay.
